As an integral part of The University of Montana, the mission of the Residence Life Office is to be a self-supporting, effectively managed organization providing educational residential communities that are comfortable, safe, and secure. Residence Life Staff seek to complement the academic experience by creating an environment that fosters the individual, interpersonal, and intellectual development of all students. Furthering the mission of the Residence Life Office, the RTA position will provide residents with live-in technology support of the DirectConnect program and other technology both within Residence Halls and the Lewis and Clark Villages.
RTAs provide technical support and service to residents of their assigned building. Additionally, they work for the DirectConnect office, providing support to Student Affairs departments and residents from any of the dorms. RTAs work at least 22 hours a week (24 hours for coordinators), with time split between hours in the DirectConnect office, working in their dorms, and being on call. RTAs must live in a dorm that is assigned to them.
RTAs are provided an award for a single room and the meal plan of their choice that they can work off tax-free. Additionally, RTAs are provided an in-phone room and voicemail at no charge.
This is only a brief overview. For full details, please see the RTA Position Description.
Hiring typically takes place near the end of Spring semester. However, there is occasionally unanticipated turnover and applications will be kept on file through the academic semester.
During the beginning of Fall semester, an increased workload on DirectConnect Office staff creates a need for extra help. This is when the Volunteer Technology Assistants come into play. Participating as a VTA is an excellent way to gain technical knowledge, as well as preferential interview spots for RTA hiring.
VTAs are assigned to an RTA and provide assistance to that RTA as needed. Each VTA is required to work a total of 10 hours during the early arrival week and first week of class. A one-hour orientation for VTAs will commence either Monday or Tuesday of early arrival week.
Early move-in charges are waived for VTAs. In addition, VTAs are provided with 3 meals per day at the Foo Zoo during the early arrival week.
