What to do in order to connect to the internet

  • An internet connection is provided to all UM dorm and Lewis and Clark Village residents. Simply connect your computer to your room network port with an ethernet cable.
  • Open your favorite internet browser and you will be directed to the DCO setup page.
  • If your internet browser is not displaying the setup page you may need to release and renew your IP address. To do this, go into Command Prompt as an administrator and type in ipconfig/release. A string of text will appear and then you will type in ipconfig/renew. This should solve the problem.
  • Once you have reached the DCO setup page follow the instructions.
  • You will be required to uninstall any existing anti-virus software and install Symantec Antivirus (provided in our setup package).

Ethernet Cord

Phone cords often come with new computers, ethernet cords usually must be purchased separately. You will not be able to connect to the internet with a phone cord, only an ethernet cord. For a list of ethernet cord prices, lengths, and places at which they can be purchased, click here

Things you don't need:

  • Anti-Virus Software - You do not need to purchase or install an anti-virus application. The University of Montana requires that you use their version of anti-virus software while on the campus network.  It is provided to students and paid for by the student computing fee.

Recommendations:

  • Anti-Spyware - Most of the time even the best anti-virus software won't catch spyware. Installing anti-spyware applications will help protect your computer against possible problems.
