Similar to the rest of the computing world, access to the Internet from The University of Montana network comes with it a responsibility to minimize security threats from viruses and other dangers. All users connected to the campus network assume a higher level of responsibility to connect to an 'always-connected' service such as DirectConnect. This type of connection subjects machines and their owner's to constant attempts to infect their machines. If these attempts are successful, data can quickly be lost, a machine can become unstable and the machine and its owner can be held responsible for damage their machine causes to others.
To prevent attempts from being successful, Residence Life policy requires users on the campus network to take all diligent actions to apply all countermeasure possible and reasonably available. A non-inclusive list includes anti-spyware, anti-virus, operating system and other hardware and software patches or updates or upgrades to new releases. Symantec Anti-virus is provided by the University for every student. If using the DirectConnect service, you are required to use this university provided anti-virus.
Failure to take these steps is a violation of University policy that will result in loss of computing privileges and may subject you to Student Conduct Code, legal and/or civil penalties.
