This is a device, similar only in appearance to a modem, that allows a computer to "interface" with a 10 or 100 Base-T Ethernet network. It has a port that looks similar to a telephone jack, and was actually developed from similar technologies.
Almost all computers sold today have built-in Ethernet interfaces. These function exactly like Ethernet cards, but are built onto the motherboard of the computer.
