Advising Tips for Faculty

When a students states that he or she is experiencing academic difficulties do to physical or psychological health impairment this may be an indication of disability. Encourage the student to contact Disability Services regarding possible accommodations. For more information please contact Disability Services at 406.243.2243.

If the student disclosed that they are registered with Disability Services you may ask the student about the functional limitations of their disability and how they are impacted in their academic work.

Reflect on the student’s academic history and consider the following:

  • How many classes should the student take in a semester? Is the student successfully completing 12 credits per semester?
  • Is it better to take classes back to back or should there be a break in between classes?
  • Should the student take morning, afternoon or evening classes?
  • Are summers and winter session courses a good option for the student?
  • When should the student attempt requirements that he or she knows they will succeed in or that will cause difficulties for them?
  • Is there an on-line option available? Will that option work better?
  • How many Internship credits or independent study credits can the student take?

Unless otherwise indicated urge the student to address the recommended prerequisites.
