FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application is your first step in paying for college. The FAFSA application is the single document used by the federal government and provides schools with your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The EFC is used to determine the types of financial aid we can offer.

We cannot begin your aid package until you have been admitted with a fully processed FAFSA on file.

Some tips for a successful FAFSA application:

  • Apply early to get the most aid possible (our priority aid deadline is February 15)
  • You can use estimated tax numbers on your FAFSA
  • File electronically, and sign with your PIN
  • Include the UM school code #002536 so we receive your information
  • Continue the application until you see a confirmation code to avoid a partial application
  • Don't pay for any FAFSA services, everything should be free

The University of Montana recommends you file your FAFSA electronically to speed up the processing time. Both the student (and a parent of a dependent student) will need a Department of Education PIN in order to electronically sign the FAFSA application. PIN processing takes a couple days, so apply for one early.
