| Notes: | Beginning on September 8, 2008, a new tutoring service, STUDY JAM, will be available to students at the UC Commons. On weekday evenings, the UC Commons will be open with study group tables staffed by professional tutors in various subject areas, including Statistics (Math 241), Spanish (101, 102, 201, 202), Chemistry (151, 152, 161, 162), and Physics (121, 122). Individual students and study groups can gather and obtain help as needed.. STUDY JAM is modeled on successful tutoring programs at other universities (e.g., University of Texas at Austin) and replaces Students Tutoring Students. The goals remain the same, to help students develop the skills required for independent learning and to help them reach better understanding of course content. Given budget constraints and the high overhead expenses individualized tutoring programs necessitate, STUDY JAM will not offer one-on-one tutoring, although students will be able to obtain specific help as needed during the open tutoring hours. A primary advantage of group tutoring is the potential for sharing a variety of views and information, as well as providing help to many more students than is possible with private tutoring. Departments may wish to maintain lists of private tutors as they have in the past and send those to us in case some students want to obtain additional help at their own expense. The Writing Center and the Math Learning Center(s) are also continuing their services for students who are looking for academic help in these areas. STUDY JAM adds to the programs that are already in place. For times, students should check the Kaimin the week of September 8. |
