Intergroup Dialogue

Each semester Diversity Programming and NCBI UM host an eight week, one credit course entitled Intergroup Dialogue.
 

Course Description:         
The purpose of this course is to bring individuals from different backgrounds together for eight weeks of honest, reflective, face-to-face dialogue about issues of identity, diversity, and social justice.

 
Course Structure:
The class meetings will be used to foster an open dialogue within the group. Small group exercises and activities will be used to provoke creative thinking and thoughtful discussions. Attendance, active participation, weekly journal entries and a final paper will need to be completed to fulfill the class requirements.

Course Objectives:

To develop and increase:
  • active listening skills
  • knowledge of personal and social identity
  • understanding the dynamics of internalized oppression
  • group pride and social identity developmen
  • awareness of socially imbedded messages about oneself and other group
  • awareness of impact of oppression on individuals and on group interaction
  • ability to approach conflict from multiple perspectives
  • ability to build bridges between individuals and groups
  • empowerment to effectively act as an ally and to ask for an ally
  • skill training to respond to oppression
  • commitment to individual and social change
