What is the Off-Campus Renter Center?

The ASUM Off-Campus Renter Center is committed to:

 ADVOCATING for student renting rights policy, 

 EMPOWERING students to assert their rights, 

 ASSISTING students with the rental process, and 

 ENCOURAGING neighborhood relationships.

The Renter Center is a service provided to students by ASUM and the UM Office of Student Affairs.

 

What can we do for you?

There are a number of service we provide to students. We offer counseling on a one-on-one basis. We help students understand their rights under the Montana Landlord-Tenant Act. We draft greivance and protest letters when appropriate. And we connect students with other community resources that can meet their individual needs. We also work closely with ASUM Legal Services. If we are unable to resolve a conflict, they can offer expert legal advice and even representation in court.

What does the Renter Center exactly do?  We...

-Offer FREE student renter counseling with a highly trained staff member and assistance from Legal Services

-Manage the Neighborhood Ambassadors program with 5 paid student ambassadors

-Create renter education campaigns in the dorms where around 75% of first-year students will move off-campus after their first year

-Serve on the Mayor's Affordable Housing Team to assist in resolving Missoula housing issues

-Write new legislation to be added to the Montana Residential Tenant and Landlord Act to further protect renters

-Manage the Online Housing Finder to provide a safer housing search engine for UMT students.  Note:  The Roommates section is ONLY available to UMT students with valid Net ID's

-Coordinate the monthly Landlord Connections Newsletter (coming soon!) to assist private landlords with common problems and provide an educational resource

-Recruit and work with the Student Housing Board to give students opportunities to build leadership and political experience while guiding the Off-Campus Renter Center in its mission

-Maintain & build professional relationships with local non-profits advocating for housing rights, lawyers, community members, and property management companies
