Steps To Resolve Renter Disputes

Even Will Ferrell knows that tenant/landlord disputes are no fun... check out the "Pearl the Landlord" video

The typical steps in dealing with a landlord issue (simplified)

#1:  Talk to your landlord about the dispute.  Ask him/her about the options that they see as possible for resolving the issue.

#2:  Collect all documents that you have received from the landlord and make sure you have copies of all the correspondence that you have had with the landlord.

#3:  Make a list of all communication that has gone on since the beginning of the dispute and keep for reference.  If you can get proof of the communication (certificate of mailing or emails) keep them!

#4:  Look up Montana Tenant/Landlord Law to research your rights and which statutes to include in your formal letter to the landlord. Or refer to the subjects to the left.

#5:  If a student, ask The Off-Campus Renter Center for assistance navigating the statutes or have a lawyer assist you with more specifics for a small fee at ASUM Legal Services

#5:  Write a formal Grievance Letter, send it Certified Mail, and make a copy.
