If possible, ask the previous tenants if they have had a good experience with the landlord and their relationship with the neighbors/neighborhood
If possible, ask the neighbors what they have heard about the landlord. Usually, if the landlord is negligent in fixing things or mowing the lawn, they will know about it
Ask if you are responsible for mowing the lawn or shoveling snow. This is a big consideration because renting a mower and mowing the lawn every month can be a HUGE hassle. Also, if you have to water the grass, ask if you are responsible for paying for the water bill. We live in a dry climate and it takes a lot of water to keep grass green!
Heating costs are very high in Missoula! If you are responsible for any utilities, call North Western Energy at 1-888-467-2669 and ask how much the gas and electric costs the previous tenants. This is a free service and is very common.
