Career Counseling Services for UM Online/Distance Students

Career development is a logical process that all individuals must go through in order to assess themselves in relation to the world-of-work, identify their career goal(s), choose a related academic major, gain relevant experience, acquire job search skills and conduct a successful job search.

Career Development Process

Career Development Process

UM Career Services has professional career counselors that are available to assist you in any and all steps in the career development process.  No matter where you are in the career development process, career counselors can help you develop a personalized plan to assist you in reaching your academic and career goals.

Career Counseling That Comes to You

We understand that you lead busy lives so we want to meet your career development needs no matter where you are in the career development process.  From a single visit with the counselor to multiple appointments, our goal is to help you reach your professional goals.

Take a Career Assessment

Career assessments are designed to help you understand yourself in relation to the world-of-work. Based on your responses to questions related to your personality, values, interests, skills and abilities, possible career matches are suggested for further exploration.  Make an appointment with a career counselor to determine if a career assessment would be beneficial to you.  Career Services offers several career assessments that can be completed online at your convenience including the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory.

Practice and Improve Your Interviewing Skills

Successful interviewing is not a natural skill; it is a skill that is learned through practice.  Using a webcam and Internet access, you can practice interviewing by responding to questions posed by the career counselor.  The counselor will then provide you with feedback and suggestions for improvement.

Schedule a Career Counseling Appointment

UM online/distance students can contact our office at 406.243.2022 to schedule an appointment with a career counselor.  At intake, you will be asked to supply basic contact information, UM student ID number, academic information and your reason(s) for the seeking the appointment.  Based on counselor availability, you will be provided with a counseling appointment date and time.  At the scheduled time, the career counselor will call you at your designated telephone number.  Please note that Career Services has a “no-show” policy for counseling appointments and these apply to distance appointments the same as in-person appointments.
