Counselor Ed Student Internship:

The University of Montana's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides individual, couples and group counseling to University of Montana students. CAPS serves students in accordance with the mission of CHC to enhance the health and learning of UM students through the provision of affordable, high quality student-centered psychological care.

A limited number of traineeship/practicum positions are open to undergraduate and graduate students who are best qualified to provide counseling services to the general student population. CAPS provides both paid and volunteer positions and sponsors educational awards up to $1200 through Community Connections. All Student Trainees receive extensive training, supervision and hands on experience in individual counseling. Some group counseling experiences are also sometimes available.

There are two levels of opportunities for student trainees at CAPS. There is one full, paid traineeship (click here for description) which is described briefly below and there are two-three partial traineeship positions. Students interested in the partial positions may qualify for an educational award of $1000 through Community Connections. The application process is the same for either position and the best candidate will be awarded the full, paid traineeship.


Full Traineeship

  • Academic year 15 hours/week
  • Complete CAPS orientation and training
  • Provide individual counseling
  • Facilitate counseling groups (optional)
  • Receives 1 hour/week of individual supervision and 1 hour group supervision
  • Arrange academic credit with faculty

Partial Traineeships

  • Academic year commitment; number of hour per week to be arranged
  • Complete CAPS orientation and training
  • Provide individual counseling
  • Facilitate counseling groups (optional)
  • Arrange academic credit with faculty

Qualifications

Graduate students in Counselor Education who have completed their 100 hours of Beginning Practicum by fall semester. The preferred applicant will have also completed courses in Diagnosis and Interviewing and Case History.

Clinical Traineeship:

HOURS PER WEEK: 15

SALARY: $9.00/hour for first year; $10.00/hour
(Note: Ordinary academic year and 12-month positions are 15 hours per week; summer or other positions may be full- or part-time.)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
Provide individual and group psychotherapies emphasizing rapid access, brief problem-oriented treatment, crisis intervention and couples work to a diverse population of university students and non-student spouses.
The trainee will perform intake interviews, generate treatment plans, record progress and render psychological diagnoses. Comprehensive psychological evaluations will be assigned by the Director, based upon such considerations as necessity, time availability and the trainee's level of preparation and interest. Networking with area professionals is expected to assure the highest quality of care for student clients. During the training year, the trainee may wish to participate as a resource person for in-service education and of informing the campus regarding issues of psychological health and care. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the trainee will attend staff meetings, in-service programs and clinics.
Training and supervision will be provided by staff psychologists and by the second-year clinical trainee. Creativity is encouraged and the trainee will have ample opportunity to pursue areas of interest and specialization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate should have attained second year standing in graduate school in clinical psychology. Coursework in assessment, psychopathology, life-span development, and psychotherapy theory and practice is desirable. A strong interest in working with university students will make this experience particularly meaningful. The candidate should have an expressed interest in providing services for traditionally underserved groups, such as women, minorities, students with disabilities, gay and lesbian students, or others. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will, if interested, remain with CAPS for a second year in the capacity of clinical assistant and will assist in mentoring first year trainees.

Self Over Substance Internship:

The University of Montana's Self Over Substances Program provides substance abuse prevention/ intervention and standard out patient treatment. Its mission is to educate and motivate students to address high-risk behaviors associated with heavy alcohol or other drug use.

A limited number of internship/practicum positions are open to undergraduate and graduate students who are best qualified to help in the overall administration of the program services. SOS provides paid and volunteer positions and sponsors educational awards up to $1200 through Community Connections. Interns receive extensive training, supervision and hands on experience in group facilitation, substance abuse assessment, providing feedback and referral, intervention, motivational interviewing, and out patient care.

Some interns will also provide counseling for co-occurring disorders. Duties include assisting the Coordinator in program operations and development, providing brief alcohol/drug assessment and intervention to individual clients, facilitating psycho-educational seminars, motivational enhancement groups and treatment groups. Opportunities exist to network with campus, local and statewide prevention efforts. Students will graduate from the internship with a solid foundation of clinical skills in chemical abuse/dependency outpatient care.

Full internships

  • Academic year 10-15 hours/week
  • Provide individual counseling
  • Facilitate psycho-educational seminars and counseling groups
  • Receives 1 hour/week of individual supervision and 1.5 hour group supervision
  • Arrange academic credit with faculty

Partial internships

  • Fall and spring semester rotations, number of hour per week to be arranged
  • Facilitate psycho-educational seminars and counseling groups
  • Receives group supervision
  • Arrange academic credit with faculty

Qualifications
Prior knowledge of substance abuse, motivational interviewing and group facilitation are preferred. Prior Motivational Interviewing course work or training extremely helpful. Internship hours occur both during the day and evenings. Students must be able to commit for an academic year.
