Dear Colleagues,
Among the great challenges confronting campuses is the humanitarian requirement to recognize and meet the needs of students in crisis, particularly when the crisis involves contemplation of suicide.
In your leadership roles as faculty and staff you are trusted and respected by students who will, from time to time, turn to you for comfort and advice when they feel most hopeless. At other times your concern may be aroused by highly irregular behavior, uncharacteristic expressions of emotion, or by the content of unusually dark essays or works of art.
Assisting students in crisis need not be frightening and isolating, although such emotions are frequently reported by helpers at all levels of preparation. Our aim is to empower potential first responders by reviewing those skills that have been shown to be most effective in assisting students. Sincerely,
Ken Welt, PhD.
