H1N1 is a respiratory disease by a type A influenza virus that is circulating widely in the U.S. right now, including in Missoula.
It is strongly recommended to take these preventative measures to help keep yourself from getting ill:
- Wash Your Hands. hand washing with soap and water or an alcohol based cleanser is an excellent way to prevent the spread of the virus from person to person.
- Practice good Cough/Sneeze Etiquette. Make certain that you cover your mouth wen you cough or sneeze with your upper arm/interior elbow or a tissue. Dispose of the tissues properly in waste containers to avoid spreading the virus.
- Get Sleep. Manage Stress. Drink Fluids. Eat Good Food. Be Active. All of these are good for your general health and will help your immune system fight potential infection.
If you are feeling sick or believe you have H1N1:
- Stay Home- unless you have risk factors or are very ill.
- Know TESTING IS NOT RECOMMENDED for H1N1. The diagnosis of H1N1 is based on symptoms alone.
- Seek Medical Attention if you are experiencing these warning signs.
- Over the counter medicine is what we recommend to treat symptoms. We have a list of OTC meds in our Cold and Flu section under Health Topics.
- If you have a fever, do not return to class or work until you are fever free for 24-hours without medication. You are still considered contagious in that 24-hour period.
- Get a School Excuse. We have these available online so you don't have to leave home.
