SASS (Stay Aware, Safe, and Sexy)
If you choose to party, choose to SASS
Here are some ways to SASS:
- Avoid drinking games.
- Eat before you drink. Eat while you drink. Heavy meals and protein slow down the absorption of alcohol.
- Use a sober driver. Decide who this is BEFORE you go out.
- Pace yourself to one drink per hour or less- this is how much alcohol your body can process safely.
- Sip and savor your drink – don’t gulp it.
- Avoid drinking games! (if you play, have a glass of water with you in addition to your drink and alternate between the two, or play with soda or juice- no one has to know it doesn't have alcohol in it).
- Keep track of how many drinks you have.
- Agree with a friend before hand to let you know when you’ve reached your limit.
- Alternate alcohol with water!
- Don’t drink something if you’re not sure what it is or who is giving it to you. Someone could have drugged it or given you an alcohol that is very dangerous to consume.
- Avoid taking any prescription, over the counter, or other drugs during and after drinking. Alcohol combined with any kind of drug can intensify the effect of the drug and cause a bad reaction, sickness, or put you in danger.
- See drinking as something extra, not as a remedy for boredom, stress or emotional crisis.
If you are the party host…
- Put food out for the party so people will munch without thinking of it as a safety precaution... but it actually is!
- Have some bottled waters available for people to alternate their drinks with or for people who don't drink.
- Have fun things planned for your party (theme with a prize for best costume, twister, poker played for cookies, etc.) so people don't solely think about getting wasted.
- Think before you drink: get some sober drivers lined up to tote you around for the night.
