AT - ALD classrooms
Students and campus visitors with hearing impairments may wish to use Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs). ALDs consist of a microphone/transmission unit and a receiving unit, and transmit a low-frequency FM signal from the speaker/instructor or PA system to an amplified receiver.
A number of UM's larger classrooms, especially newly refurbished electronic classrooms, are hard-wired for transmission of low-power FM signals to ALDs. Several public venues on campus, such as Dahlberg Arena in the Adams Center and the University Theater, are similarly hard-wired and loan ALD receivers to audience members at no charge during public events. Patrons who have their own ALD can use it in these locations by setting their receiver to the channel and frequency of the transmission in that location.
For students who require an ALD in order to have access to course lectures, Disability Services authorizes the use of and loan of, an ALD. UM's ALDs may be checked out by students with a Griz Card. Of course, students who have their own ALD and prefer to use it may do so. Also, in those classrooms which are hard-wired for ALD transmission, students may simply set their receivers to the proper channel and frequency for that location.
The table below indicates classrooms and other facilities where ALD signals are hard-wired in the facility, and the appropriate settings for that location.
Note that IT Central is open between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. IT Central is located on the first floor of Social Science, Room 120. ALD checkouts from IT Central are available to students only, and only with authorization from a Disability Services Coordinator.
