Western Undergraduate Exchange

Duration: Four year or completion of a bachelor's degree, renewable award

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship at the University of Montana is awarded as a merit based scholarship. You do not need to apply for the WUE, you will be automatically considered based on the academic information on your admission application.

The WUE scholarship is valued at 150% of in-state tuition rather than out-of-state tuition.  The WUE scholarship will not appear as a credit, but is reflected as a reduced tuition on a student's bill. You may see the WUE tuition by going to the Business Services website.

If you are awarded the WUE, you are not eligible to receive any additional non-resident entering student scholarship.


Applicants must be first time incoming students to The University of Montana (freshman or transfer) from:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • South Dakota
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • Wyoming
  • NEW FALL 2013: Students accepted from The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) will be eligible for the WUE Scholarship at UM.


For autumn or spring new students, you may qualify for the WUE Scholarship if you meet the following criteria:

Test Score SAT 1860-2400 or ACT 28-36 SAT 1700-1850 or ACT 25-27 SAT 1540-1690 or ACT 22-24
Unweighted Cumulative High School GPA
3.80-4.00 WUE WUE WUE
3.70-3.79 WUE WUE
3.50-3.69 WUE WUE
3.0-3.49 WUE


For autumn or spring transfer students, you may qualify for the WUE Scholarship if you have a 3.40 or higher Transfer Cumulative GPA.

Application Procedure

Applicants must apply for admission to UM. Scholarships will be awarded on a merit-basis from the information on the UM admissions application. 

Maintaining the WUE

The WUE scholarship is automatically renewed each semester provided the student uphold the conditions of the scholarship. Students must continuously enroll as full time, degree seeking students and earn a 3.0 GPA each semester. For new Freshmen and Transfer students the scholarship is in effect for up to four years or until completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first.

WUE students who are going on exchange, taking temporary leave from the University of Montana or requesting an extension of their scholarship will need to download the "Scholarship Appeal Form" located on our documents and forms page (Under the Scholarship Forms heading) and submit to the Financial Aid Office for consideration by the Scholarship Committee.
