Since the days when UM alumnus Mike Mansfield served as U.S. ambassador to Japan, UM has had a strong connection with the people of Japan. In response to the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disasters of March 2011, The University of Montana has launched the Japan Rising Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to help support future students from Japan directly impacted by these tragedies, particularly from the Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures in the Tohoku Region. Fundraising for this scholarship is taking place from summer 2011 through Mach 2012.
For more information and how to donate to the scholarship fund, please go to the UM Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief- Ways to Help page at www.umt.edu/japan.
Foreign Student and Scholar Services also maintains a Foreign Student Assistance Fund to aid students in times of emergency. In spring 2011, we established a unique account specifically for currently enrolled UM Japanese students impacted by the disasters. The outpouring of support and donations of over $11,000 to that fund was impressive. We, and the students who were helped through the emergency fund, are deeply appreciative.
