Living Learning or Special Programs

LIVING LEARNING COMMUNITIES AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS

There are several programs within the Residence Halls that have reserved space for program participants. Living Learning Communities offer unique residential experiences by merging classroom learning with students' out of class experiences. Students with a common academic or social interest will live together on the same floor or wing of a residence hall, allowing the community to have focused programs and a shared interest amongst community members in a specific topic area. In some Living Learning Communities students will also share an academic course. We also have space reserved for specific programs that students are assigned in clusters in a variety of residence halls and share participation in a common program together.

Why Living Learning?

Students that choose to live in a Living Learning Community have a unique opportunity to share at least one class with their neighbors on their floor or wing. This gives students easy access to study partners, floor programs focused on the living learning community and additional access to faculty members. Residence Life offers multiple living learning communities for students with a variety of interests to enhance their academic experience.

Chemistry Living Learning Community

Students with an interest in a science based major can participate in a Chemistry community to help in their transition to science at the university level. Students in this community will be enrolled in both CHEM 141 and BIO 108 and will be enrolled in the same Chemistry small group section. Programs for this community in the 2011-2012 academic year included study sessions in the building before tests, a chemistry 'magic show' with Professor G-Wiz, and informational sessions for pre-pharmacy majors about applying to pharmacy school. The Chemistry Living Learning Community is located in Craig Hall. If you are interested in the Chemistry Community, please indicate CHEMISTRY on your application.

Intercultural Living Learning Community

This community is focused on bringing students together who are interested in living and interacting with people from different backgrounds, countries and viewpoints. This community is open to all International and American students wishing to broaden their perspectives and understanding of the world. Students choosing to be part of this community will have access to intercultural activities that help explore global themes and create a global community on campus. Program ideas for this community include foreign film nights and world music nights, to name a few. The Intercultural LLC will attempt to pair International and American students as roommates, and provide a faculty-led programming series on cultural and global issues. Residents will be required to remain in good academic standing and be active participants within the community. Participants of the Intercultural Living Learning community will take a 2-credit course together, titled Intercultural Perspectives, Collaboration and Skills. The Intercultural Living Learning Community is located in Miller Hall. If you are interested in the Intercultural Community, please indicate INTERCULTURAL on your application.

Honors Living Learning Community

Students that have applied and been accepted to the Davidson Honors College can also choose to live together in a shared community. While these students do not have to be enrolled in one specific course together, they will have common shared class options through the honors program. The Honors Living Learning Community is in Knowles Hall. If you are interested in the Honors Living Learning Community please indicated HONORS COLLEGE on your application.

Interest Floors

In addition to Living Learning Communities, Residence Life also offers several interest based floors. These are communities in which students on the floor would share a common interest, but not be registered in an academic course together. These communities offer students a chance to live with other students who share their interest and have focused floor programs around their interest.

Fraternity/Sorority Interest Community

Students that intend to go through the Fraternity or Sorority recruitment process and join a chapter at UM can chose to live in a Residence Life community with other students interested in Fraternity or Sorority Life. These students will not share a common class, but rather a common interest in joining a Fraternity or Sorority chapter. While there is no expectation that students join a Fraternity or Sorority, this community will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about them and meet others with the same interest. Program ideas for this community include values conversations, meeting with members from the Sorority and Fraternity Community and social events with students from multiple chapters on campus, to name a few. The Fraternity/Sorority Interest Community will be in Jesse Hall. If you are interested in the Fraternity/Sorority Interest Community, please indicate FRATERNITY/SORORITY on your application.

Substance Free Community

Students that have an interest in living a substance free life (no alcohol, drugs or tobacco) can choose to live together in a community that supports this life style. The Substance Free Community is located in Aber and Knowles Halls. If you are interested in the Substance Free Community please indicated SUBSTANCE FREE on your application.
