College Level Exam Program (CLEP)
CLEP examinations are now offered only by computer. CLEP CBT examinations are not adaptive. They are fixed-length, 90-minute exams. New questions will be pre-tested. This means new questions will be administered to students taking actual CLEP examinations, but these questions will not be scored.
The University of Montana awards college level credit to undergraduate students based on the official score report. Official score reports may be obtained from CLEP Transcript Service, PO Box 6600, Princeton, NJ 08541-6600 or by calling 609/771-7865. For the latest updates visit the official College Board CLEP site.
CBT allows for a creative and cost-effective means of preparing multiple test "forms" for administration to multiple candidates. Each test is created by combining individual questions and/or sets of questions that meet content and statistical specifications (e.g., varying difficulty of questions). By randomly choosing from the test forms created, the computer will administer different tests to candidates taking examinations in the same subject; candidates taking the same test who are seated right next to each other will have different versions of the test. NOTE: At this time, The University of Montana testing center has one station available.
Score reports are available immediately following the exam, with the exception of the English Composition with Essay exam. This exam is sent to College Board to be reviewed and graded. Examinees receive a score report in the mail from College Board within two to three weeks.
The total cost for each CLEP exam is $90: $70 (check, money order, or credit card) which goes to the College Board CLEP, and $20 (check, money order, credit card, or cash) to The University of Montana.
Please go to the testing center to receive a mail-in registration form, or you may call 1-406-243-2175 to make an appointment.
The UM Testing Center offers these exams on a one-on-one basis by appointment only. Please call 406/243-6257 or testingservices@umontana.edu, or visit the UM Testing Service office located in Lommasson 154.
This policy was developed and is maintained in consultation by academic departments at The University of Montana and Enrollment Services - Admissions. Credit is granted according to the policy in effect at the time of evaluation. All credits are assigned the grade of credit (CR*).

English Composition with Essay requires the test taker to write a 45-minute essay in addition to completing a 45-minute multiple-choice section. You may not take both versions in the same six-month period. Before registering to be tested, find out which CLEP exam your college requires. The English Composition with Essay exam is offered only in January, April, June, and October.
